You have run teams, owned a P&L, closed deals, and built organizations. You haven't cleaned a commercial building, and you have no intention of starting. That is not a barrier. It is the profile the Stratus Clean master franchise was built for.
Here is the short answer: the franchise you can own with leadership experience but no industry background is one where the franchisor supplies the industry knowledge, and you supply the leadership. In the Stratus model, you hold a protected territory, award unit franchises, secure commercial cleaning contracts, and support the franchisees who deliver the work. No prior cleaning experience is required, and the role does not involve cleaning.
Franchising exists to transfer a proven operating system to owners who did not invent it. That is why franchisors screen for management ability, sales skill, and financial capacity rather than for time served in the sector. The International Franchise Association describes a master franchise as a structure in which the franchisee holds exclusive rights to a territory and takes responsibility for recruiting and supporting sub-franchisees within it, in exchange for a share of fees and royalties (IFA, Types of Franchise Investments). The IFA also notes that master franchisees carry development obligations. At Stratus, that obligation is to build the unit network in your territory, not operate a cleaning unit yourself. That description fits an executive, not a technician.
The sector is also growing into that demand. The IFA's 2026 Franchising Economic Outlook projects franchise output of $921.4 billion in 2026, up 1.6%, with roughly 845,000 franchise establishments, up 1.5%. Commercial and residential services tie for the fastest-growing franchise category at 3.2% year over year (IFA 2026 Economic Outlook). Stratus operates in commercial and facility services, part of the commercial and residential services category the IFA tracks.
When executives search for a franchise with no industry experience required, two kinds of options dominate the results: owner-operator concepts where you learn a trade, or passive investments where you have little control. The Stratus master franchise is a third category. You become a franchisor within your own territory.
Mechanically, your rights within a defined territory cover two things:
The unit franchisees perform the janitorial work. You build the network, lead contract sales, and manage a lean office team. The model runs mainly on weekdays with a minimal headcount, because the labor lives inside the independently owned units, not on your payroll. Our page on what it means to own a Stratus territory walks through that distinction in detail.
Every function of the master role maps to something a senior leader already does. We train the industry-specific knowledge. Our guide to franchises for executives covers the transition in more detail.
Our masters come from education, sales, insurance, engineering, and retail. Successful candidates typically bring 15 or more years of leadership experience, a sales orientation, and comfort with P&L responsibility. No prior cleaning experience is required, and the backgrounds above show it is not the norm.
Michael Seiler of Stratus Clean of Southeast Louisiana puts it plainly: "Would I do it over? Probably three more times." Franchise Business Review's 2025 survey found 86% of our masters would do it again, one of the highest satisfaction figures in franchising. You can read more owner stories in our franchisee spotlight series.
We have refined this system for 20 years, and our leadership team brings 150+ years of combined franchising experience. The onboarding sequence is designed to take a capable executive from zero industry knowledge to a functioning territory operator, with training across marketing, sales, accounting, operations, and product management.
After launch, support continues through marketing and operations programs, a National Accounts program to help you grow, a national insurance program, finance and business management support, and direct access to a peer network of 90+ master franchisees. Details are on our training and support page.
Choosing an industry you do not know is easier when the fundamentals are simple and stable. Commercial cleaning qualifies on both counts.
Stratus Clean was founded in 2006 and today operates 100+ master territories with 5,500+ unit franchisees across the U.S. and Canada. We are the fourth-largest commercial cleaning franchise in North America, named the #1 Fastest-Growing Franchise by Entrepreneur for four consecutive years, and ranked the #1 Commercial Cleaning Franchise and #21 overall on the 2026 Entrepreneur Franchise 500. We hold #228 on the Franchise Times Top 400 and were a Global Franchise Awards 2024 finalist.
System-wide context from Item 19 of our Franchise Disclosure Document: $3.2 million average unit volume across franchised regions in 2025, $9.5 million average among the top five regions, and $238 million in system-wide sales. These figures describe the strength of the system, not what an individual master owner earns. Individual results differ, and you should review Item 19 and Item 7 of the FDD before making any decision.
Most franchise systems have three to seven revenue streams. Stratus masters have nine: franchise fees, finance fees, contract sales, special services, admin fees, insurance revenue, royalties, transfer fees, and supply sales. Roughly 90% of that revenue recurs. Our earnings model breakdown explains each stream.
A master territory is an executive-level investment, not a small-business purchase.
Veterans are actively welcomed, and qualifying veterans receive a 10% discount on the initial franchise fee through VetFran. Item 7 of the FDD is the authoritative source for investment figures; see our full investment breakdown for context.
You are likely a strong fit if you can say yes to most of these:
Cleaning experience is not on that list, and it never will be.
Protected master territories remain open in many U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Review the current list on our available territories page, then start our six-step discovery process. You will review the business model, receive the FDD, speak with our corporate team, and talk directly with existing master franchisees before committing.

Yes. Franchisors select owners for management, sales, and financial capacity rather than sector experience, because the franchise provides the operating system. At Stratus Clean, master franchisees need no prior cleaning experience, and the role does not involve performing cleaning services.
A master franchisee holds exclusive rights in a protected territory to award unit franchises and secure commercial cleaning contracts. You recruit and support independent unit franchisees, win accounts, assign contracts to your units, and manage the territory as its franchisor.
The master license fee averages about $125,000, with roughly $150,000 in working capital, for a total investment of $275,000 to $300,000. Candidates need a net worth of $250,000 or more and $125,000 to $150,000 in liquid capital. Item 7 of the FDD is the authoritative source.
Initial onboarding includes pre-opening training, one week at corporate headquarters, and two weeks on site in your territory, supported by a dedicated onboarding coach. Ongoing support continues after launch through marketing, sales, operations, finance, and peer-network programs.
Commercial cleaning is an essential service with recurring demand, a roughly $100 billion annual market, and a fragmented competitive landscape. The IFA reports commercial and residential services tie for the fastest-growing franchise category in 2026 at 3.2% year over year.
