Stratus Clean

Ty Redmond & Darrel McNeal

Stratus Building Solutions
Master Franchise – Milwaukee, WI

We’re both salesmen at heart. Darrel has over 20 years of sales experience, primarily in the B2B world, and I bring more than 12 years in B2B along with over 12 years in education. What ultimately led us to franchising was the chance to own our own business without having to figure everything out from scratch. We wanted something with a proven model, in an industry that remains steady regardless of the ups and downs of the economy — and franchising gave us that opportunity.

What was the deciding factor in choosing Stratus over other opportunities?

During our discovery phase, what really stood out to us about Stratus was the chance to connect with other Master Franchise owners in similar markets. Hearing their stories made a huge impact — not only were they running successful businesses, but they were also enjoying a quality of life that allowed them to live comfortably without sacrificing time with their families. That balance was something both Darrel and I were looking for. Combined with Stratus’ proven model, strong brand reputation, and the stability of the commercial cleaning industry, it quickly became clear that this was the right opportunity for us.

What’s a standout success or milestone you’ve achieved since becoming an owner?

One of the proudest moments for us so far was being named Rookie of the Year last year and also earning Office of the Year for the start-up tier at Stratus. Those awards meant a lot because they validated the hard work we put in from day one. Beyond that, what really excites us is the consistency we’ve built — we’re currently on a ten-month streak of hitting company goals for both franchise and contract sales. That consistency is a milestone in itself because it proves we’re building a foundation that’s strong, sustainable, and built to last.

How has Stratus shaped your professional growth or personal outlook?

Stratus has pushed us to grow in ways we didn’t fully expect. Professionally, it has sharpened our leadership skills — transitioning from sales backgrounds to running a Master Franchise has required us to think bigger, lead teams, and balance the needs of both franchise owners and clients. Personally, it’s given us a deeper appreciation for what it means to build something that not only supports our families but also creates opportunities for others. This business has shown us that success isn’t just about revenue — it’s about helping people build their own businesses and providing a service that genuinely makes a difference. That perspective has completely changed how we approach both business and life.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned on this journey that you wish you knew earlier?

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is not to wait until reaching a milestone before hiring or building out a team. Initially, we thought we needed to “hit a certain level” before adding people, but the truth is that waiting can slow growth. Bringing on the right team members and putting systems in place ahead of the milestone gives you the ability not only to reach it but to sustain and exceed it. Having that support in place early creates the foundation for long-term success.

In your opinion, what makes Stratus different from other franchise systems?

What makes Stratus different, in our opinion, is the balance it strikes between structure and opportunity. The model is proven and provides clear systems to follow, but at the same time, it gives us the flexibility to grow in a way that fits our market and our goals. Another big difference is the culture — there’s a genuine sense of support from the corporate team and from other Master Franchise owners. It feels like being part of a community that truly wants to see you succeed, not just a number in a system. That combination of a strong model, a supportive network, and the freedom to build something meaningful is what truly sets Stratus apart.

What qualities do you look for when bringing new franchisees into your team?

When we’re bringing new franchisees into our team, we look first for people who are coachable and willing to follow a proven system. Drive and determination are important, but equally essential is the ability to listen, learn, and apply the guidance that’s available. We also value strong work ethic and reliability — qualities that are vital in the commercial cleaning industry. Finally, we look for people who view this as a long-term business opportunity, not just a job, because those who treat it that way are the ones who truly thrive and grow with us.

Who or what has been the biggest source of inspiration in your business journey?

Our biggest source of inspiration has been our families. For me, having four children, Stratus represents an opportunity to build something that directly benefits them and creates a legacy for the future. But for both of us, it’s also about the impact we can have on others. We now have nearly 40 Unit Franchise owners, and knowing that what we do helps them provide for their families and create their own opportunities is incredibly motivating. It reminds us every day that this business is bigger than just us — it’s about making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

What would you say to someone who’s on the fence about becoming a Master Franchisee?

I would say that if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves, put in the work, and truly want to make a difference for others, then take the leap of faith and do it. Becoming a Master Franchisee isn’t always easy, but it’s absolutely worth it. You’ll not only build a business for yourself and your family, but you’ll also create opportunities that impact the lives of others. If you’re on the fence, my advice is simple — go for it. You won’t regret it.
